Tonight’s movie: 小武Xiao3 Wu3. You know those mainland Chinese movies you always see, the ones where it seems nobody has a job and they just hang around dirty warehouses and dusty vacant lots all day, smoking, and listening to announcements blaring from some PA system, and nothing really happens? It was one of those.

  4. Yeah. Of this genre, I liked “Unknown Pleasures” better.

Hahah! When I read your description, I immediately thought: “Steve’s talking about Platform.”

Checking the IMDB, it turns out that director Jia Zhang Ke made Xiao Wu in 1997 and Zhantai (Platform) in 2000. I really enjoyed Platform (I much prefer movies where “nothing really happens”) so I’ll have to see if I can find Pickpocket.

    Thanks for the recommendation!

  6. OOooh, we’ll have to watch that one too. Much to Jenny’s dismay.

Well, your post inspired me to go looking for DVDs (I’d only seen Platform on TV late one night a couple of years ago).

Happiness! Artificial Eye in the UK have not only released Platform on DVD but they also offer a two disc set containing both Xiao Wu + Unknown Pleasures.

I got them for a pretty good price from Benson’s World in the UK.

The DVDs are Region 2 PAL, which is no problem for me since I have a multiregion PAL/NTSC player and TV, but I thought I should mention it because you’re probably already thinking of buying these DVDs as a special gift for Jenny.
