A common expression is 你嚇我一跳 – Ni3 Xia4 Wo3 Yi1 Tiao4! – You Scared Me One Jump! This leads to the obvious conclusion that the unit that fear is measured in is “the jump”.

  2. That must be the metric unit. Of course the Imperial English units of fear are willies (wls), dickens (dkn), and the linear distance to death (ldd).

    1 wls = -(1 dkn) = .5 ldd

  4. Actually! Yes! I distinctly remember that when we finally saw Walde’s subtitled copy of “SHAOLIN PRINCE” aka “DEATH MASK OF THE NINJA” aka “IRON FINGERS OF DEATH” at one point Ti Lung said 你嚇我一跳! and it was translated as “you scared me half to death”!

So that means being scared TWO jumps would kill you. Well, assuming it’s a linear scale.
