FoF 0.1.7 - now!

Geekism

Feed on Feeds 0.1.7

This version fixes that stupid mistake with htmlspecialchars in the last one that broke the forward and back navigation links on view.php. And! It includes a experimental pre-alpha version of Magpie that really tries its best to get the whole character encoding thing right. It uses this method, except it tries iconv (thanks Phil!) before trying mb_convert_encoding. Anecdotal evidence has shown that if iconv is installed, it may be more reliable than mbstring. It’s still not clear just what percentage of servers out there is going to have either one of them installed. Future versions of FoF will analyze your system during install.php and let you know what you’ve got and what encodings are going to work. For now, if you find feeds that still are getting corrupted, send me the links!

first of all: thank you very much for offering such a cute piece of code!
you have asked for trouble feeds:
http://www.instant-tech.com/blogs/ctyler.nsf/stories.rss
http://chris-linfoot.net/stories.rss

another problem (since i use fof - i think i began with 0.1.3):
the “update all” process is quitting very often saying “Cannot query database. Have you run install.php? MySQL says: Lost connection to MySQL server during query”…

steve

hipslu: The first feed you posted, at instant-tech, is not valid XML. Try it at the http://feedvalidator.org/ and it will show you that there is an undefined entity (a HTML non-breaking space) in the XML. FoF can’t deal with feeds that are not valid XML.

The second feed worked fine for me! What problems are you seeing with it?

And that database problem: I’ve never seen that. I searched for that error string, and found this page at MySQL.com:

Feed On Feeds 0.1.7
After skipping a few versions, I’ve installed Feed On Feeds 0.1.7.

I’ve been having a few problems with blogs that use certain charsets (eg. WINDOWS-1252 and ISO-8859-15), but the new features are cool.

Sorry for the technical post, but if you …

Found another error:

URL is not RSS or is invalid.
error was: MagpieRSS: Failed to fetch http://zonble.twbbs.org/feed/rdf/. (HTTP Response: )

But the feed validator result is passed.

steve

From the error message (”Failed to fetch”) it sounds like an HTTP problem. I did notice that Zonble’s size was having some problems the other day, I was getting some Server Errors. Try again!

Thanks for saying something, Steve.

These were the URLs I had trouble with (and still have):

http://acausafoimodificada.blogspot.com/atom.xml
http://rassenfrass.blogspot.com/atom.xml
http://cheiraqui.blogspot.com/atom.xml
http://enresinados.blogspot.com/atom.xml
http://j3zz1kuh.blogspot.com/atom.xml

(these were all using the WINDOWS-1252 codepage), and:

http://the.taoofmac.com/space/RecentChanges?format=rss&images=no

(this one is using ISO-8859-15).

Thanks.

steve

The validator message in both cases is correct. These feeds are not well formed XML. FoF can’t deal with feeds that aren’t well formed.

riffola

Ah thanks.

Andrey

I can’t add feed:
http://blog.exmachina.ru/index.xml

it’s encoding is “Windows-1251″

I have PHP 4.2.2, both iconv and mbstring are installed

Alex

Just a brief note (and if there is no response, I’ll try proper email *gasp*) to say that I love this tidbit, and if you are interested, I’d like to add to it. I’m an avid bloglines.com user, but they have no plans of a commercial solution I could use across a intranet, and hence my interest in FeedOnFeeds. What I want to do with it is to hack at that multi-user bit, then create a Topic Maps engine to run categorisation and indexing, and an API that can be used in an intranet. Finally, I’d like to add support for Wikis, as in http://www.shelter.nu/blog-070.html. Anyways, let me know what you think.

steve

I think it sounds great. Go for it!

Feeds with > or / in them appear to break the left frame in frames view

ex. http://www.digital-djs.com/xml/DDJReviewsRSS.xml
ex. http://partners.userland.com/nytRss/books.xml

Also, if an " is used in a feed entry title, it does not appear as a “, it shows up as "
