Amazing, in the same day I finally make contact with the guy from the famous Mario Piano video (the comment from “the source” really is him!), I find this video. It’s by KeiicHi, and from the look of his message board, the video has already made the rounds on at least the Asian parts of the internet. It’s a great version of the Mario music, complete with sound effects!
A post from one of his fans on the message board sums it up nicely:

the coin sound effects sound right when doing harmonics on the 7th fret, though in the video it looks like he does them at 4 or 5. the arpeggios weren’t too bad, he probably just stumbled trying to remember which note to play, technique wise they were very cleanly executed. If he recorded it a few times, he could have probably gotten a version where he doesn’t stumble. I know it can be hard to play something while recording, it always seems to jinx me.

oh and btw, does anyone know what kind of guitar he’s playing? to me it looks like an early Charvel superstrat, but i can’t make out any logo on the headstock. These kinds of guitars, as well as these kinds of players are reminiscent of a day when rock guitarists didn’t suck donkey balls. This guy has some cool hair too.

started a version of this the other day a few days ago 9not this specific one) and now I’m completely hooked. i’m obsessed. To get the the coin effects there are two ways:
a, either turn up your guitar fuzz/distortion and play at the 5th fret harmonic on the B and E
b, for a better sound, if you have a jackson or ibanez sort guitar, hit an open E and hammer at the 24. its awkward but its better than turning your distortion up because you start to lose detail.

it sounds like the first (intro part could be fifths) and i really like the wicked sweeping in the ending… sweeping is something i really must work on more until i can get those yngwie far beyond the sun parts.. everything else in far beyond the sun is easy but some of those sweeping parts. and mario tune is pretty bitchin.

hey, if you wanna see tabs for this stuff check out ultimate-guitar.com and do a search for mario bros theme music. they have the whole thing, and its about as close as you can get to the real thing
