Chinese Word of the Day

- Ding3 - Peak, Top

屋頂 - Wu1 Ding3 - House Top — Roof

Today, for free, bonus Korean words: 옥탑방 고양이 - Rooftop Room Cat

Walde has been bringing over episodes of this Korean soap opera, Rooftop Room Cat, for us to watch. I thought it was going to be awful. Soap opera? How can that be anything? But it’s really good!

It’s based on an “original Internet novel” (like My Sassy Girl) and is about these four people in Seoul who have a love… quadrangle? trapezoid? Well, whatever it’s called when A likes B likes C likes D likes A. The main characters are almost too cute to stand, and there’s a few other characters thrown in who are really easy and fun to hate. So far we’ve seen 6 of the 16 episodes, and it’s still going great.

We’re getting to the point where watching this show is interfering with our normal activites (homework, sleep) so we’ll probably be finished with it really soon. I doubt it will end with everybody dying, but we’ll see.

Don\’t forget the lame but infatuating Soundtrack. The little kids did not steer me wrong on this one. This is the next one in my sights. I\’ve seen plenty of information about the show, but very few impressions… which is worrysome. Maybe something better will pop up by then. I\’m hoping Yesasia will start subtitling Chinese tv series. BTW, here\’s a pretty good site on Korean tv series for those of us that can\’t speak/read Korean.

steve

Lame? I spent several hours last night trying to download the soundtrack! I couldn\’t find anything on the P2P networks, I found a million Korean sites that would let me download it, but I always needed a user/password. I found one site that would let me download it as a WMA file, but when I tried to play it on the PC is said something like \”to play this we just have to quickly install Microsoft(R) Digital Rights Management(TM) copy protection software.\” I was like, \”ummmm… No?\”

walde

lame but INFECTIOUS. I find myself humming it whenever I steal my roommates money to buy shoes for a date with this girl that I really like that likes this creepy guy with an earring instead. I just KNOW hilarity is on the horizen when I hear myself humming that.

chris

to put it simply, I LIKE IT! i guess the english translation of “rooftop room cat” is that it’s a teeny bob, that’s why you call it LAME, but like any other show(s) you see on television it’s ENTERTAINING bordering on the weird side. i mean i don’t see myself lending that much money to anyone let alone take advantage of her generosity and hospitality by living with her and have her take care of me, feed me, and wash my clothes. but then again the unspoken attraction they have to each other is the reason why i find the show ENTERTAINING… and if you want to DOWNLOAD the theme song through P2P try searching for “attic_cat_ost” - that’s it for me.

Elly

I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! I catch it every night (Tues - Thurs), the soundtrack is WONDERFUL too!!! I can’t wait till next weeks episodes!!! AZN TV rocks!!! ~.^

steve

Yep, I have the soundtrack too. Got it here.

nammy

I am totally hooked on this show but missed the first few episode so I don’t understand how they ended up living together and why the guy can’t just fo live with his grandparents.

Hilal

I am hooked on this show and i don’t even watch soap operas. Is there a way to get all the episodes on tape???? please??? I only saw 2 episodes so far…….i love this show!
Go Chi town!

steve

Not on tape, but you can buy the series on DVD from yesasia.com .

Kim

I love this show.I am so hooked. I found it on accident and now I can’t stop watching it. Do you know if it is available to rent? I missed the first few episodes.

steve

If you live in a big enough city, you might be able to find it to rent, but I bet you’ll have a hard time renting one with english subtitles.

Lee Ann

Hey I found you site while doing a search for Rooftop Room Cats and wanted to say hello!. I stumbled across this show while flipping through the channels last week and I am hooked. Oh how I wished I would have caught this from the start … it is so addictive. :-) I’m going to check NetFlix and see if I can rent the DVDs. Though I have a sneaky feeling I’ll just end up buying the DVDs outright.

steve

I tried to do my part to make sure people wouldn’t miss any of it… you just should have discovered my weblog earlier!

Kim

I found a Korean video store that has the DVD’s but you were right, no english subtitles. Do you think AZN will run it again?

seadog

Wow, I thought I was the only one getting by on five hours of sleep to watch this show. You can get the series on ebay for a reasonable price.

Dominique

I was able to rent the DVD set at a Korean video store and it was the American release from YesAsia. I really like this K-drama. I just wish that Kyung Min was a little more honest and not too much of a typical male. But then that would ruin the story and the fun of it. The only thing about the TV and DVD version is the difference of translation. Some parts are totally worded differently and there are some parts in the DVD set that is completely a “lost in translation” as well. Other than that, I like every minute of it. I checked the schedule for this show and it seems like it will repeat itself today. Also, it’s supposed to be added in “On Demand” for Comcast sometime this Summer. I’m just wondering if that’s the AZN version or the DVD set.

steve

WOW! Rooftop Room Cat “ON DEMAND”!

If you want wacky subtitles, try “My Love Patzzi”, another k-drama. They often didn’t make EVEN A SHRED of sense.

Dominique

Another thing I wanted to make a comment on is that on the TV version, everytime there’s a part where the character is reading something it’s being translated. While on the DVD version, it’s completely nothing. Then there’s the part where he was sleeping out and it started to rain and he made a comment… DVD - “Even God is on my side”… TV - “The sky is even helping me out”. ??? Sorry for the spoiler. Anyway, since I’m not Korean I was just wondering if any of you are and if you can just translate what was written in Korean at the very ending of the show. Not the credits on the side bar of course, but the one that’s on the bottom of the screen while they were hugging right before the director says “Let’s wrap it up!” =P Because I was just curious if it says “… and they lived happily ever after.”

Dominique

I need to correct myself. Seems like Comcast doesn’t have a line up for AZN On Demand. It will only be available for direct AZN subscribers and not through Comcast. That really bugs! Along with the difference of translation… I must be obsessed.

TJ

you can download all 16 episoes w/subtitles at

atticcat.wo.to/

links become active SAT/SUNDAYS

Will

This is a fantastic show! I stumbled upon the 3rd episode on AZN and I was hooked right away. It only airs 3 days a week in the Eastern US so I bought the DVD set from YesAsia. Hong Kong to Atlanta in under 40 hours(losers at UPS)! If anyones wondering…BUY IT! How about a part 2….anyone?

moe

sup i noticed for some reason it didnt air today which upset me im wondering if last wednesday was the last 1 when the each had new jobs and kyung min rented the rooftop room? plz email me

steve

Yeah, that’s the last episode. And the new series they’re showing, “Jewel of the Palace”, they show at 5 PM for some reason.

caroline

Yeh, i love the show, is there gonna be a 2nd season by chance & if so, anytime soon?

steve

No, I haven’t heard anything about another season. I don’t think Korean shows work that way.

Dominique

Yup! 2nd that… If there’s going to be a 2nd season, then it just ruins the story and the question of, “what really happens in the end?” By the looks of it, they’re very much in love with each other. Him for realizing the things he ignored. And her because of a one night stand??? I dunno, but that’s what you call “love”. Like it or not, as stupid as others may think, it’s freakin’ love. At least it shows that the rings were worth the purchase. To carry that around on a daily basis, hoping it will find it’s rightful owner. And it did…

nammy

So now Im hooked on jewel in the palace but as usual have missed the first few episodes. My family is starting to regard me as rather strange for being an AZN junkie to which I say if it’s interesting it doesn’t matter where it comes from. Besides bollywood is doing too many remakes of hollywood films, it is nice to find original programming.

Mike

Like many of you, i was flipping through the channels and stumbled upon this wonderful show. I was hooked on the very first episode. From Hye Ran’s arrogance, to Jung Eun’s honesty i fell in love with all the characters. I was also disappointed with the ending but it had wonderful music and storyline…speaking of the music, anybody know where to download it? I’ve been singing it and people look at me strangely.

steve

You can download the soundtrack on weekends.

Mike

Thank you very much steve…after hours of searching you have finally given me what i needed. The sweet, sweet music of the show. Forever grateful, thank you!

slei

can anyone tell me where to download the full episodes of “jewel in the palace” please i need to have it since the dvd and vcd copies of it are not available here in the philippines. t.y. ^_^\m/

William

Song been done in China, if you want can get it for you for US$20/-

Rebekah

OMG! I love this show!!!! I live in the U.S and this show tottaly rocks! I love that there are English sub titles so I dont have to miss out on whats going on. My husband use to laugh at me for watching the show, but not I have him and our two baby girl addicted to it!

=)
Rebekah

Stella Cogno

Just a random complement… Rooftop Cat is a great show. My husband is Korean and I am American. I really enjoy watching modern day like interactions (even if its a tV show). I t helps me understand my husband’s culture as well as my Korean friends. I hope thye continue to bring episodes like this to the Miami, Florida area. If anyone knows of any other good shows like this, please advise!.

Thanks
Stella

steve

Most of the other Korean shows I’ve seen aren’t as funny as Rooftop. They usually are more dramatic, with people who love each other never getting together for like 30 episodes and they dying in the end.

“My Love Pattzi” was also fairly funny, but not quite as good. I liked “All About Eve” too.

Jacqui

as many of you I too got hooked on this show! I wish they would have showed us a little more. I wonder if they went back to living together.
Anyway, I went to the web site mentioned above to see if I could download 3 of the episodes I missed and it says that downloading is not available anymore.
Does anyone know where I can download some of the epidodes. I was looking to buy it, but couldn’t find it under $80.00, which for me is too expensive.

Thanks to all for all your comments, very entertaining.

Stella

You can buy the whole series for $69.00 on yesasia.com. It’s good quality.

Does anyone know if arranged marriages are still prevalent these days in Korea? I would assume so, but I have been told that young people marry for love too. I guess its a silly question, but I am trying to learn about the culture from first hand sources. If anyone has insight…

kelly

hey everyone didn’t died at the end, it’s a very good show and theirs no seconds season i think
