Tonight we watched this movie, 三更 2 – San1 Geng1 2. 三 means Three, and I really don’t know what 更 means in this context. But I do know that in English, the movie is called Three… Extremes. And it was 非常 bad.

三更 means “midnight”

Really? Midnight as in 12:00 AM? Or more like “middle of the night”? Jenny told me about this expression 半夜三更 which means “in the depth of night” but we still weren’t sure exactly what the 更 means.

long time ago, 更 was kind of unit for counting the time in the night.
a night is divided to five 更s. one 更 is two hours.
三更 is 12 o’clock in the midnight or just midnight.
got it? ^__^
