便

Chinese Word of the Day

便 - Bian4 - Ordinary, Convenient, Casual, Then

便飯 - Bian4 Fan4 - Ordinary Meal

My dictionary says that 便飯 can mean “a simple meal” or “potluck” (a meal where everybody brings a dish). Jenny thinks it actually is more the first meaning, just a simple meal of plain food, what my mom would call “catch as catch can”.

The word “potluck” has two rather different meanings. In the phrase “you’ll have to take potluck” it means a meal created from whatever is at hand - this is probably what Jenny is thinking of. In the phrase “we’re having a potluck” it means a communally-provided meal - this is probably what you’re thinking of. So you’re both right. (http://www.bartleby.com/61/24/P0482400.html)

Huh. I wasn’t aware of that alternate English meaning.

…yes, and it is the former definition of the two that is invoked when your mother says we are having “catch as catch can” for supper tonight.
