  2. the kanji in japanese is pronounced \”yume\” and although the kanji for the first part of \”nightmare\” in japanese is slightly diffrent the reading would be \”akume\” which is something like evil dream. If you want to look at the kanji\’s diffrence then type in \”akume\” in your handy japanese text program. Or \”warui\” which is the stand alone reading.

  4. There is a scene in \”Love Hina\” where Keitaro is looking up the japanese equivalent of \”dream,\” and it\’s debated whether /yume/ means dreams like visions in sleep, dreams like aspirations, or dreams like unattainable goals.

  6. I can bring my years of training and perspective to bear on this issue: I have noticed that in chinese movies (ok, kung fu movies) bad guys will often say \”Stop dreaming!\” when challenged by good guys. So I think at least in Chinese, it can connote an unattainable goal or fantasy.

And no, I\’m not just basing this on that one part in Iron Fingers of Death where the Ninth Prince says \”Yer dreaming! GET \’EM!\”
