Now that’s a spider!

Regular

This gigantic spider lives in our picture window, thankfully, on the outside. I think he thinks he has the best web location ever, not realizing that he’s inches away from a window. Maybe bugs also don’t know that there’s a window there. But this spider looks more like he eats mice, birds, cats, and maybe small children.

He’s about an inch long, and sometimes rears up on his back legs when you get too close, like when you set your camera on macro and put it about 3 inches away.

The first few weeks living in this house, I used to sometimes get a face full of web trying to get in the side door. I think it was this spider’s web I was breaking, becuase I saw him hanging around that door a few days later. At night, I swear, he appears green and slightly flourescent. I think I’m lucky to be alive.

You can click on these last two front and back views, if you like, for high resolution shots.

Me

ugly and scary….how is it that Jenny has permitted him/it to survive?

steve

The fact that it\’s on the outside has a big part in it. Jenny usually doesn\’t like to kill bugs even in the house, she wants me to catch them and bring them outside.

ethan

jesus chirst that\’s the scarriest f\’n spider i\’ve ever seen. i\’m gonna have nightmares for the rest of my life, along with the ones i have of living with you and nate. thanks again steve!

susan

oh my lord!!! why did you enlarge that freaking thing???!!! that looks very dangerous and i think it\’s poisonous. you better get rid of it before the kids come visit. i believe it does eat small children. janice is at risk!!!

isis

what a beautiful creature….maybe I can do more study to classfy.

Nate

dude show that to daryl.. i\’ll bet he\’ll go nuts and trash your place trying to kill it.

That\’s one nasty looking bug.

steve

This morning the spider is no longer in the window. Which means he could be ANYWHERE!

Toto

It\’s female. Right now, it\’s probably just hiding its eggsack of hundreds upon hundreds of children, to be unleashed in the Spring. Even though this probably isn\’t one of them, I\’d like to point out that there is a species called \”Hobo Spider.\”

It\’s funny because you either imagine:
- a spider that carries bugs on a stick
- a spider that only afflicts hobos.
- or both!

tim

sooooooooo FREAKY I\’LL SOOOO FREAK IF ONE OF THOSE WAS IN MY ROOM

Charlene

Wow I thought I was scared of them but ewwwwwwww there so ugly don\’t you think.

Lee

Ah, now this cute little specimin is acctually safe. It\’s a common garden spider.
They\’re ussualy found in north america, europe and england, quite frankly because… They live in gardens.
They\’re acctually fairly timid little buggers and any you\’ll see will ussualy be male, because the females are more active and tend to prifir the dark where as males arn\’t so picky. They\’re completely harmless.
Their \”fangs\” are about as thick as human hair and they\’re the size of a fingernail at best with their legs out.

They like making large webs though.

Caitlin

i have one of those in my backyard….scared the CRAP out of me!

Caitlin

oh ya its called an Orb Weaver.

Dannii

This spider is so cool. I\’d be worried about it spitting babies out though. Catch it and throw it far away. Plus, what if one day you have tots over for a vist and they try to touch it? That wouldn\’t be safe.

SAPPHIRE FLAME

errrrrm hello!! arachnaphobic here.

Emily

ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
SCARY SPIDERS!!

They do make some spectacular webs, though…EXCEPT WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH THEM!!
Lordy, how do you survive?

xu

so Beautiful

fco

i love spiders

Ioan

He, he… That’s a spider???? You should see the ones outside my window. I think there are 10-12 big spiders, all about 4 cm long, and they all apear at night. During the daytime, you think the area is clear, but if you look closely you can see the web, hanging around. But i like them, and I never let anyone break their web. Someone told me that the spiders are poisenous, but I like them anyway. SO DO NOT KILL THE SPIDER!!!!!!!! or else… :D

meatwod

I wouldn’t be worried its just a regular garden spider its fang aren’t actually strong enough to break human skin and even if they were they carry poison any way. I have around about 30 of them dotted around my garden and I’ve never been harmed by one of them.

Tommy

hey whoever posted these pics i just took pictures of one of those spiders out side my kentucky home so please email me and give me info about the spider i need to know if it is poisiness thank you.

steve

I have no idea if it’s poisonous. Several people posting here have said that it’s either a “Garden Spider” or an “Orb Weaver” and that it’s harmless.

philip

how long dose the spider stay alive

philip

whene dose it sleep

philip

because i have got one at home on the window but it is inside not outside

nikki

nikki

steve

Those pictures were from last year. I don’t know what happens to spiders in the winter…. I assume they die? We have more spiders of that same species this year, but they haven’t grown to quite the same size yet.

lisa

Yuk! My daughter has 6 of these spiders outside her window in the forsythia bush. The biggest one is probably an inch long (just the body) and the legs make it look huge, like it could jump off its web and tear through the screen at any moment. My daughter says they are wolf spiders and quite harmless, I’m not convinced. I am having difficulty eradicating them though, my daughter has named them. Ricky fell a little while ago, my daughter screamed “What did you do to Ricky?” not knowing who the hell Ricky was, I just shrugged and smiled “Ricky?”

halfmonkey

…….THHAT IS SAPPOSED TO BE SCARY!?!?! I think u all r wusses!

halfmonkey

You sister HOT

Buzz

I’m guessing you’ve ID’d it right - I just found one outside my back door (dodged the web at the last minute!) - looks like one I had (and protected) out my front door several years ago. THAT one was beautiful - colored stripes. This one is terrifying!!! Don’t want to spray it and poison the birds, but wish one of those birds would come make it their lunch!

Buzz

Definitely ID’d mine as an orb weaver - can cause mild illness and necrosis. YUCK. (It has a more attack-like stance than the one above - this one does indeed look more like a garden spider - which can be very pretty - yellow and striped. Definitely not a wolf spider. - look ‘em up on Google images.) Any ideas how to do it in without spraying? It’s not easy to “swat” on it’s web!

walse

Ive seen that type of spider around my house, yes , it likes window sillls.
It a real heavy weight of the spider local species(USA) .I think there kind-of dangerous ; because there big. Im scared of them for-sure, Im sure ,ever scence I saw one in my barn , the one I saw was to large to be around , its body not including its legs was the size of a standard cd (crab like) ,it must eat mice or birds.I set a sticky-trap (for mice) on my top shelf, havent caught the monster sized spider yet, and Im scared when I take a peek up there, If I catch it ,Im gonna send it to an university ectomologist, I might even sell it to them, I dont fell save.. its bigger than a tryanhcula , ecto-wonder way to way to ……………….way out Ive seen soft shell crabs smaller. this type seems to continue to grow larger and larger ,proportionitly each year after molting, Way to big to be around comfortably. I estamate its weight to be 1/2 pound. jesus christ ,did I have to see that !!!

NSK

What a lovely spider :)

Spid's Mom

I’ve also got one who lives outside my lounge window. It is so big, we assumed it was a male and named him SPID VICIOUS but further research has identified him as a “her” and she’s turns out to be a common old garden spider. The name has stuck now and I look forward to seeing her every night when I get home from work (aaahhh!). She disappears in the day.

steve

Yeah! Same as ours. They make their webs at night, and hide during the day.

These pictures are now somehow famous. I’ve had two different educational institutions write to me asking if they can use them. One wanted to use them on field study cards. Cool.

Anonymous

Her latin name is Araneus Diadematus. She’s also known as a Common Garden Spider, or Cross Spider (because of the cross-like markings on her back). She’s also generally known as an orb spider because she spins orb webs (which she eats each night and then rebuilds). She mostly comes out at night and hides during the day. She spins a cocoon for her babies in Autumn, and then dies next to it a few days later. The hundreds of babies hatch the next Spring. It’s not poisonous.
I’m sure there lots more to know about her, but I think it’s time I got my anorak and left ;o)

steve

Thanks for identifying it! I haven’t seen them lately, I wonder if they’ve already died.

Barbara

omg!…i have one of those spiders living just outside my door!:S…i thank god that its not posionous! But its still scary!!

Anne

I have one outside my kitchen window. He’s been there since August, and he’s almost become a member of our household. We named him Fred and we introduce all houseguests to him… I am very frightened of spiders… but it gives me comfort every day to see that Fred is still there.. and hasn’t decided to take up residence indoors. But this is good. I didn’t know what kind of spider he was… I was afraid he’d be poisonous.

YUCK

Joshua

that spider is in no way harmful to humans. it’s bite is no more dangerous than a bee’s sting. That spider isn’t anywhere near big either… the one tarantula i keep, a goliath bird eater, (Theraphosa blondi) will have an 11″ leg span. Around the size of a large dinner plate.

I love spiders,
Peace,
Joshua

Veronica suchil

I HATE SPIDERS

lauren rose simmons

these r good but try and getsome pics of a spider that covers the whole of a dinner plate

ByWater

Our home is on the beach of a shoreline city and because of the profusion of bitty flying things, these particular spiders hang in tens and twenties around every porch lights. I call them KFC b/c they seem big enough to serve with a side of slaw. My cats think they’re delicious, so they don’t hang out within reach anymore.

The largest one I’ve seen had a body as big as the last knuckle of my thumb. She was climbing in my car window, I’m guessing, to make an egg sac. I’m terrified of spiders so I am ashamed to say that I freaked and killed her (I did manage to pull my car over without crashing).

The message I keep hearing from friends in the know is that it’s more likely that I would be able to take a bite out of the sidewalk than to be bitten by all but a -very- few of North America’s spiders. I don’t know if I believe that, but the more I learn, the less panic I feel.

btw, canned air or a hair dryer will move them along if you’re the non-kill type.

Bob

I stumbled across this web-site quite by accident. Last month I spent several hours trying to identify this spider. Today it’s the very first site I opened. My son brought one home from a job-site he was working at. I’d never seen one prior to that time. I kept it for about a week and a half in a small reptile cage trying to determine if it was dangerous or not. Even though I never found out, it was too beautiful to kill, I let it go in my backyard. I’m glad to find out it’s not deadly variety.

jessica

i found the spider under my deck and i was about 2in. away from my face it scared the living day lights out of me!!!!!!!!

Shaleesa Livingston

I came over to my friends house to visit. She told me about this gigantic spider that was under her deck. I didnt beleive her until I saw it and almost died.

John Davidson

I get these guys every year. They were cool at first, when they would arrive around Halloween, but at that point, there was only one of them, and I thought that was it. Then I noticed a second one and decided to do an extensive search one night. I think I gave up at about 13, and that was just on my own property (in the trees, between the bushes, in the windows, on the sides of the house). Now, one or two is ok, but that’s a little ridiculous, and I HATE walking into them in the middle of the night.

I love spiders, in my own weird way, and fully understand how necessary they are for the environment, but I can’t even walk around my own yard without waving a stick in front of me.

Anyone know of any good methods of getting rid of them?

phil

I had a funnelweb march into the house one day…I tried to deter it with a stick. It immediately attacked it and I could see the venom dripping off its fangs. I caught it and put it in a jar. Took him to the spiderguy next day…they harvest the venom.

phil

Interesting Australian spiders…got the link right this time.

Jacob

Not dangerous in the least. Honestly, spiders are very interesting and I commend you for not killing it. It’s known as a Cross spider because of that white marking on the abdomen (back) and it is found pretty much everywhere. For those who keep yelling about how nasty it is I recommend NOT searching “Venezuelan Bird Eating Tarantula” on Google. It’s about 11-inches end to end and is completely harmless (to humans). Another of the worlds misunderstood creatures…

lucky

send me pictures of spiders

I just killed, like, 10 of those huge spiders on and beneath my deck. Also killed all the little ones hanging between the deck posts. Those spiders are pure annoying as I walked into the webs all the time. The thing is - they reproduce fast! I kill them today, but the little guys will soon take over the deck. I use a hockey stick to break the webs and to “slapshot” them in til they break apart and burst! I scored lots tonight!!! Anyways, IS THERE A BETTER WAY TO HANDLE THESE CREATURES??? I don’t want to have to kill them everyday???? Help? Thanks.
Chad.

Jebus

Don’t f*ckin’ Kill ‘em MoFo wot they do to u. They only trying to make a living!!

Tami

Thank you Jacob for clearing this up. Not a spider fan - IN my house- but I know beauty when I see it and this is a gorgeous spider. All I did was ONLINE research to find out that this is a virtually harmless orb weaver called the garden spider, or cross spider by nickname due to its markings. They are fairly big but stay OUTSIDE. Having them by doors and/or windows RULES because they catch those darned flying insects in their huge webs. They respin new webs each night, typically, and hide during the day. Not sure what all the fuss is about- research was easy! By the way- I had 5 of these on my house siding during late summer and into early fall this year. Just the past 2 weeks did they disappear altho I just found a sluggish one in my basement so I brought it outside. Poor thing.

nanice

i had my second encounter with this particular spider last night. the first time was last fall i saw one on the side of my garage, didn’t mess with it at all. but last night i was coming up my stairs and lo and behold this monster was on the outside of my window! i mean he seemed like the body part was about an inch big. his striped legs scared me. i thought he was poisonous. thank you for posting your pics because as soon as i saw them, i was like, “that’s the spider on my window!!!” so thanks for clearing this up for me. even though he was not poisonous i will have to say that my grandfather went up on a ladder and killed him for me. i can’t have that thing hanging around. i’m sorry. he was beautiful, but i wasn’t comfortable with him displaying his beauty so close to where i sleep!

Nicki

I had a cross spider that built a web between a downspout and a hanging chime. When I first discovered it, I wanted to kill it. But then watching it build the web was magical; I just couldn’t kill the creature. It was a little weird, but I started catching bees during my lunch hour and let them go close to the web. 9 out of 10 times they became stuck; the spider immediately came out of hiding, ran down the web and wrapped it up for dinner and then went back up to hide under the gutter. It was amazing to watch, and then after about a week it disappeared.
Although it was an interesting experience, I really hate spiders and hope it doesn’t return.

Liv

I had one of those spiders in my room and i still dont kno what the heck it is

Lucy

there was one of those spiders in were our dog stays and it gave me and mum almost a heart attack!!!

amber

there was this freaky black little spider with a little yellow lookin mark on its back i like freaked out and idk wat kind it was but i killed it so
