關
關 – Guan1 – Close, Shut, Turn Off, Concern, Involve
So open is 開 and close is 關. They look similar. The frame around both is 門 – Men2 – Door.
Inside 開 is 幵 – Jian1 – Even, and inside 關 is something meaningless and confusing, but it seems to have something to do with threads or looms.

wow, the japanese use a totally different character for close. open is the same.
open = 開ける
but close = 閉める

That\’s interesting, there\’s Kanji that are made up of other Kanji and Katakana? I wouldn\’t have guessed that these two character sets would have infected each other this way.

well, the katakana is just a simplized version of some kanji somewhere, same goes for hiragana. I actually wonder if the thing in the japanese character for close is katakana O or it`s something else. Anyway, it looks and is written the same.
