Server-Side PHP/MySQL RSS Aggregator: FEED ON FEEDS VERSION ZERO

FEED ON FEEDS VERSION 0

FEED ON FEEDS is a server side RSS aggregator. Server side beats client side because you stay in sync no matter where you go, and all your links and stories stay in your browser, where they belong.

This LazyWeb entry, combined with having plenty of free time this weekend, finally pushed me to release this thing. Will it work for anybody other than me? Only time will tell.

  2. Works for me, great script!

Had a little trouble setting up the cron at first but then I noticed that you were using wget not lynx.

  6. Steve,
I\’d like to try it, but if you are about to upgrade to Magpie 0.5, I\’d rather wait until that is done. Can you give me a shout when you have done that?

I used Magpie to create the weblog and media feed pages on http://www.sarswatch.org, and I really like it. I saw your post on laughingmeme and stopped over. Feed on feed looks great.

    Thanks,
    Tim

  8. Hi Steve,

Works great, installed without a hitch, or at least the only hitch is creating the Magpie cache dir which I can\’t really blame you for :)

2 features which would be great from 10 minutes of playing with it are:

    1. OPML file import

    2. mark as read checkbox, and mark for delete checkbox so I can mark items for processing, and then click once at the bottom of the page.

    looks great.

  10. Good ideas all. There\’ll be an announcement here when 0.1 is done of course, and I\’ll email you Tim as well.

I\’ve got auto-discovery going now, the checkbox thing will be easy, OPML might have to wait for the next version though. We\’ll see.

  12. Would someone who doesn\’t know PHP be able to install this and get it running? The most complicated thing I have gotten up on my server is Moveable Type.

  14. Yes, you should. Assuming PHP and MySQL are already installed and running on your server, all you need to do is unpack the archive, upload the files, edit just one of them to add your database connection information, and run the installer. It may be unable to create a cache directory, depending on your server\’s configuration, and in that case it will prompt you to create that directory manually.

I\’ve never installed MT but I think the difficulty level should be about the same.

  16. Just to say I do have it up and working and it is not too hard for anyone who has installed MT. You have to do many of the same things: create a MySQL database, make folders on your server, and upload files. The only new thing for me was using Tron, and my CPanel help file had enough info to enable me to figure it out. In thanks, I would like to point you to http://www.lockergnome.com/amazon/ , which has RSS feeds for various Amazon categories.
